When you need one – and how we can help

If your skip bin fits on your own property – your driveway, front yard or building site – you generally don’t need a council permit.
If the bin has to go on council land – the road, the footpath or the nature strip – you need a permit from your local council before it’s placed there.
If you’re in the City of Darebin and your bin needs to go on council land, we can waive the council permit fee for you. Just tell us when you book and we’ll take you through it.
City of Darebin: Preston, Reservoir, Northcote, Thornbury, Kingsbury, most of Fairfield and Alphington, and part of Bundoora.
Other councils: Macleod is mainly in Banyule, and Bundoora is split between Darebin, Banyule and Whittlesea. Parts of Fairfield and Alphington are in the City of Yarra.
